Este artigo examina o cenário hipotético de uma guerra nuclear em grande escala e avalia o potencial de vários países para sobreviverem em condições de catástrofe global. Com base na análise de pesquisas científicas e avaliações de especialistas, são reconstruídos os principais fatores que determinam a capacidade de uma nação e da sua população de suportar um conflito nuclear e o subsequente inverno nuclear. Dá-se especial atenção às conclusões dos investigadores de que apenas um número limitado de países, principalmente situados no Hemisfério Sul, possuem as condições necessárias para manter a produção agrícola e a estabilidade social no período pós-apocalíptico.
